Debunking learning styles myth

  1. Here are my thoughts regarding this article on learning styles. I've also included a video of a student submitting an assignment with their learning styles taken into consideration.

  2. I think it just reinforced my perception of learning styles. Like I said earlier, matching the presenting style to the learned topic is a great teacher strategy. Doing an assessment of the diverse learning styles of your students should be a given if one wants to be a better teacher. Curating the lessons to help students who may benefit from a new strategy or presenting style should be what we do regularly, but I understand how time consuming that may be or even challenging if we find ourselves not particularly strong in that area. In essence, when you practice differentiation in your classrooms, it shouldn't just be about levels of mastery but include learning modalities.
  3. Besides learning styles, as mentioned in Topic 1, a strong foundation of usability and accessibility needs to be built into the course. Alternative content should be provided. I think this is a great future PD for us to get actually, but of course paid with a $150 differential...hahaha. With alternative content, a flexible assessment method should also be offered for the students. As we know that a diversity of learning styles exist, we should also utlizie a diverse set of assessments. There isn't only one way to test content mastery. Grading tests and essays can also be exhausting fo the teacher so providing various options for students should be fun for us as teachers, too! I also think that culturally responsive teaching is something we can all work on. Our textbooks already aren't necessarily designed for our students, so we need to make it more culturally relevant and relatable. Being truma-informed and responsive will also help build rapport and build empathy. I reflect on my early years of teaching and cringe at how savage I was. Like, come on, where is the heart? We are all human and we have to remember that our students are also dealing with life.

  1. When you're ready to present this concept to others, I'd like to invite you in one of my school PDs.
